Springer Spaniel is  extremely smart and learn very quickly. The Springer is the right choice for either a city or country home because they are so eager to please, loyal and like people. Playful and energetic, the Springer Spaniel can bring its owner many hours of amusement. Springers are excellent all around dogs. Good training can bring excellent results in many fields, including agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are wonderful with children and are a perfect choice for families. Children should be supervised with all breeds of dogs.

Springers are quite friendly, and eager to please their owners. Some people have compared their temperament to the popular Golden Retriever. They are happy to go home and lie around the house if that is what their families are doing at the time. They are very flexible and acclimate easily to various activity levels, as long as they are allowed to be with people as much as possible. Springer Spaniels are incredibly affectionate! We know this from experience. As breeders, we have raised a lot of puppies and can absolutely testify to this fact.

As a breed, the English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized sporting dog, and can weigh anywhere from 35-55 pounds at adulthood. They are typically healthy dogs that live happy lives that average about 10-14 years on average. Field bred Spingers have short hair and are generally more active than the show bred types. All Springers have their tails docked shortly after birth, but the length of the tail differs between two “lifestyles.” The tails are docked shorter for Springers who are shown, whereas the working, field-bred Springers have longer tails so as to be an efficient signal for hunting.

The coat colors for English Springer Spaniels comes in either two combinations of black and white or liver and white. A tri-color combination exists, charactized by a liver, white, and black coat, but this combination occurs infrequently and only results when the sire and dam are both tri-color as well. A white mark down the middle distinguishes them.

English Springer Spaniels were bred to be natural hunters with a lot of energy, so you can expect your Springer to enjoy running around, sniffing out “game,”and retrieving things for you. Springers have long been used as waterfowl and small game hunting dogs so they enjoy outdoor activities and being around water. Being a very old breed they have been popular dogs for a long, long time. These dogs are the oldest but best hunting breed around.
