So You Want to Start a DVD Duplication Service, Huh?

Why would someone want to do business in CD duplication? After all, everything is moving to iPods and smartphones, right? Think again. Most music is still listened to on a good old CD. So if you thought CDs were on their way out, do not count on it just yet. But are not

CD duplication services just for folks who need thousands of discs…I ca not handle that many CDs! Not necessarily. In fact, the big companies often focus on mass production often at a fairly high cost. That leaves the door open for you. I mean sure, you may not make a million dollars a year, but you can bring home a respectable profit if you work at it.

Software vendors, music artists, and companies who need to secure their data all need a place to turn to for CD duplication needs. It is time for you to be that person. You may already have most of the equipment necessary for production. First, you will need CDs (no kidding, heh). Next, you will need a computer (either a desktop or a laptop should do the trick) that comes with CD burning capabilites. Third, you will need the software to actually burn CDs. Finally, you will need the most important thing…the customers, silly! Even if you do not have the equipment, it iss not hard to obtain. Most computer companies and general merchandise outlets (Sears, Wal Mart, etc.) offer computers and software of all sorts. And the cost is not out of this world, either.

Now, back to those customers…who should you go after. Find out what local bands are in the area. Where? Check MySpace or Facebook. If you are attending school or college (or have a friend or relative who is), ask around there. Bands are looking for someone quick and easy to get their music mass produced. They maybe can not afford a professional company, but you might be just what they are looking for. Another target is a small business. You would think someone in the company would handle it, would not you? But you would be surprised at the number of companies who do not have the time or computer knowledge to handle their own data backup. Usually when that is the case, they simply decide to do without the backup. As we both know, that is a bad idea!

My suggestion is to go online and see what the big wigs charge, then use that as a template to figuring out how much you will want to charge. If you set a sensible price, nice turnaround time, and superior disks, you will not only have customers coming back, word of mouth will really get you jump started. So if you are interested in starting your own

CD replication , now is the time!

A Couple Things to Ponder Over Morning Coffee

Is coffee one of the world’s most consumed beverages because of its very distinctive and nonreplicable taste or is it popular because the naturally occurring caffeine in coffee is slightly addictive? If it is the latter then why do people who drink only decaffeinated coffee still drink coffee regularly or even as part of a daily ritual? I am not loking for a scientific answer - just wondering. Whatever the final outcome of such ponderous questions, it still remains that when we do drink coffee we want it brewed to taste just right, time after time. The coffee maker is a major contributor to our success or failure in making th perfect cup of coffee. Would a coffee maker thermal make the difference for you?

I am going to lose weight. I am going to get in shape. These are probably the two most frequently uttered phrases in the human experience, not counting anything made up in the moment about lifelong commitment that has been induced by adolescent male hormones. Since hardly any of us actually do physical labor for a living, thoughts about fitness almost always end up in decisions about fitness training equipment. A jump rope works great for aerobics but for strength training and muscle toning you need something that will provide resistance and stress your muscles. No pain no gain is a fitness truism. There is a plethora of choices and before buying consider how cybex exercise equipment will fit into your fitness goals.

Air beds and air mattresses are the most practical, and often the most economical way to provide sleeping accommodations for guests, for the kids sleep-overs, for comfortable sleeping in your RV, and for camping. A high end air mattress and its associated bedding can cost almost as much as a conventional mattress and box spring but there are many excellent choices at the lower end of the price range too, like a spring air back supporter mattress. One of the best features of inflatable beds is that you can deflate them and store them away when not in use making that space available for other uses.

Cheap holidays to New York: the subway is safe sometimes

For cheap holidays to New York, most Americans would roll into town on the train. The cost is significantly less than flying in by plane. Best of all, you leave the car behind. In New York City, driving a car is a huge disadvantage. The traffic is a sold jam all day, every day and the cost of parking is $25 to $45 on top of what the room will run you.

Taxis are not a good choice either if you are on a tight budget with the meter running as you are sitting still. At a dollar a minute a 20 minute cab fare just 3 blocks will not only ruin your mood but your budget.

The public transportation is the best and cheapest way to get around the Big Apple. With an all day pass going for under $10 and a week’s pass for less than $30, this is the best way on a tight budget.

For those of you that are skeptical and believe the nightmares that Hollywood has portrayed the public transport system, just remember, Hollywood exaggerates everything and the NYC subway system is no exception. You should take the proper precaution like traveling during the most occupied hours. Midnight to 5 am is ok but without a crowd, the likelihood of being harassed does increase. Using common sense is your best weapon on staying safe from harm not only in New York City but anywhere and you would still be able to enjoy cheap holidays to New York City anytime of the year.

Web Design Life Cycle

Web development although very flexible and dynamic can follow the time-honed and tested methods used in systems development. Here we have identified which phases are applicable and added those are that unique to the esoteric world of the web.

Note: All throughout this document, the words web sites, web applications, web-based applications and intranet/extranets will be used interchangeably.

1. Analysis
This is the phase that most of the higher management and the ROI-concerned folks do not fully appreciate since there is no tangible output in this stage. The analysis phase is very vital as this is when you answer the tough questions: How will the web application help the present system? How is it going to help the business? Equally important is the question: How will the website complement or be integrated into the current or existing system?

Analyzing the pros and cons, setbacks and pay-offs of the website need not be too time-consuming and resource-intensive. Focus should be given to the identification of target audience, existing resources that can be utilized (e.g. a database, an excel file of customers, etc.) and ways that the website could be fully exhausted. For example, a client plans on publishing their product catalogue online; why not employ an online shopping cart and payment system? This way traffic to the site is fully monetized.

At the end of this stage, the team should be able to come up with complete cost-benefit analysis and the identified goals should be realistic. The analyst should consult the website developers, designers and testers to gauge the effectiveness and viability of the plan.

2. Specification Building
Preliminary specifications are drawn up to cover each and every element of the requirement. For example, if the product is an online store then the modules of the site such as the general layout, site navigation, and other dynamic parts are identified. Feature-rich projects will require various levels of consultation to assess additional business and technical requirements. This is the stage where you identify the who, what and when: what technology to use; who among the group is best suited to do the codes for each and every module; when is the expected delivery of the product.

After reviewing and approving the preliminary document, a written proposal is then presented to the client. The document should outline the scope of the project including the responsibilities, timeline and cost.

3. Website Design and Development
After the specification of the project has been identified and the proposal signed by the client, work on the web site commences. Normally, the site layout and navigation will be designed during this phase as prototype.

Two to three study designs are offered for client viewing and approval. Some client might demand to see the full functional prototype - then the team has to show them the interactivity of the site’s various features.

In most cases, the client will give suggestions and require a lot of changes on the prototype. Once a final version of the design, layout and navigation has been achieved with the client’s approval, of course, you should freeze the prototype before you start the codes.

We need a quick definition of FREEZE here. It is a method to make both parties to agree on how the web site will look like and function on the launch day.

The development team during this phase will start the database structure. All necessary information should be had from the client, such as access to test servers and database, ftp login, sample data, and images they would like displayed in the site.

An Insight into Shooting Picture Library Photography

Introduction

Welcome to An Insight into Stock Photography. This article is based on a talk given at Focus on Imaging 2007. I hope you find it interesting. Just remember these are my views only, they are not gospel and have been put together based solely on my experience of shooting and making money from stock photography, primarily through Alamy and photographic magazines.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the markets and the economy in general. This has affected the stock photography market. But don’t lose faith , magazines and newspapers have an insatiable appetite for images.

One Approach

Having many options - and finding opportunities to build a business in photography. And stock photography is just part of that - a chance for someone else to market your images for you and to for you to get paid, while off doing something else. It’s like having commission only sales people working for you. The thing is you have to give them something saleable but you can’t give them a kick up the backside if you’re not selling much!!

Some professional photographers don’t do it, some do, some make a living from it. The choices and balance is up to you, as a commercial photographer I do some of it.

It may seem like an uphill challenge but it’s not and it’s within most people’s reach . Provided you understand the customer. This applies to both the Picture Library and the Ultimate Buyers.

Take a look around you. Pictures are everywhere - the printed media in its widest context has a massive need hunger for images on a daily basis.

Humans generally don’t like reading online - well not for very long - they like tactile magazines to flick though and dip into and if they didn’t, the newspaper industry would be long gone by now - wouldn’t it !!

Every magazine, exhibition, web site, company brochure and newspaper all need images on a regular basis - and if they don’t have it or can’t send a photographer to go out and shoot it - then they’ll buy it.

Printed media works on deadlines that go right down to the wire, so immediacy is important and the shots can’t be the same old ones used month in month out.

The picture buyer generally will work to longer lead times and less tight deadlines - but not always - the images they buy can be more general or iconic - like these motivation posters you see in some work places.

Take for instance a sports shot of runners on a track - you might see it in the sports pages of a newspaper for a day, then maybe in a Athletics magazine that month - but it can soon become a poster with a motivational statement “Defeat” or “Winner” that has a whole new market.

So where are you - the photographer - in the pecking order so to speak. Take a look below.

• The Photographer
• The Stock Library
• The Picture Buyer

You’re on the top of the list with the image library between you and the buyer, but at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting paid. But whilst you need to meet the technical requirements of the library and other submission requirements, it’s the picture buyer you must be thinking of long before you even contemplate picking up the camera.

The picture library will do the sales and marketing of your images, for a percentage which varies from library to library, but they must have images that buyers want.

Before you sign up, read through the agreement and see if the set up suits your requirements.

Diverse Sectors

Each of these publications, Gossip magazines, The Times Newspaper, Corporate Publications, serve a different market - but each buy photos from Alamy to mention just one library - they also buy from many others too - in order to make the publication that day, week or month.

So what sort of pictures do these publications buy? Well it’s very varied. Just browse through and look at the side of the shot, it’s likely to have an image source next to it.

• Take a Break - items / products, staged poses - youth etc.
• Daily mail - travel
• Environment - utilities, waste, pollution etc, - front cover.

Easy Money - NO!

Some say it’s a numbers game - true to some extent, but the way I look at it is this, if you’ve got 10,000 images of shots that won’t sell - you’ve got nothing .

For me as a professional photographer that provides photography services, it’s the long term view - looking to grow and maintain a set of saleable images.

Remember pictures are perishable - i.e. - they go out of date - and this will vary dependent upon the industry sector or subject they relate to.

Transport, fashion, IT, business, communications all need, in my view, re-shooting each year. For example a man in a suit by a computer the size of a house in the 1950’s isn’t the modern business image of today.

Wildlife, sky scenes, landscapes, travel pictures - less so - but look at any developing city - take London - since the Wheel and the Gherkin went up all the skylines are different, also look at Dubai - developing all the time.

Easy money - no it’s not - but you can build up an underlying income if you think about saleable pictures and keep them relevant - remember they have to illustrate a story - so need to tell a story in their own right.

What is Stock

So let’s take a look at how you get in and who there is to choose from. Each Library has its own benefits and key target markets, so find one that suits you and what you are good at shooting.

• Getty
• Alamy
• Comstock
• Jupiter
• Superstock
• Fotolibra
• Istockphoto,
• Pixtal
• Jumpimages
• Adams
• Nevstock

Most will have web sites and these will stipulate how to join of make submissions.

$ Sites

For me I don’t like them and here’s why. I’m going to set you a project and at the end of it I will buy the photograph off you. So you go and shoot a subject you like, do your research, do the shoot, post produce the image and upload it to my site and hey presto - I pay you 50p at today’s exchange rate — any takers ? I rest my case!

Submission Rules

All image libraries will set technical standards and these will vary depending on how much server space they want to invest in.

Alamy work to 48mb TIFF minimum - 1, to keep the bar high enough that only the serious photographer applies and 2, to give their customers’ choice and immediate access to high quality images. Now they’ve changed this from the above to accept JPEG images - so your file size is down to around 8 meg.

Others work on thumbnail sizes then let the buyer contact you. Personally, I think, trying to judge a shot off a 100 or 200k image is not doing the shot justice.

Others specify minimum standards of camera / model, or make you go though an approval or recommendation process. The thing with this is to find a library that matches your needs and capabilities. Also the amount time you have available to dedicate to stock photography.

Licenses

Non-Exclusive License

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the picture , but another image buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence.

The picture buyer must specify, each time: intended use, media, territory and duration.

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. The territorial pricing will be matched to the specific country.

Exclusive License

The picture buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image.

The picture buyer obtains exclusive use of an image under the terms of the licence: these terms may affect the use, media, territory and/or duration in which the image can by used by other buyers.

Rights protection can be an advantage for high-profile projects such as ad campaigns and promotions.

Royalty Free (RF)

The picture buyer pays a one-off fee - they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis.

The picture buyer will not know who else is using the image.

The picture buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before using the image where a release is required, for example Model release for people and property release for prominent buildings or logos.

Commission

  • 50/50
  • 60/40 but with global distribution
  • 70/30
  • 80/20 - Photographers Direct

Again find one that works for you and also find out when you’ll get paid and any minimum balances you must have to get paid. Sometimes you can wait 3 months for your money.

Work Flow

As a provider of photography services I shoot RAW and make minor adjustments to pictures . Now I’m using Adobe Lightroom in place of Raw Shooter and it’s speeded up my work flow considerably. Photoshop - I use this far less now but only to colour and touch out any dirt or what might look like dirt - by this I mean the occasional bird in the sky can look like sensor dirt if it’s a way off in the distance. Resize your image. Output the file to the required format.

Then depending on the library upload over the Internet or cut a CD / DVD.

An Example

Take an older camera the Nikon D70 - 6.1 mega pixel camera. Raw files were around 4 or 5 MB and a TIFF was at 17MB with the JPEG at 4MB.

To meet the submission guidelines you need to Interpolate the image - make it bigger. In Photoshop this was Image > Image Size>Percent. Increase by 168% to give a 48 - 50 MB sized image. Then Save as Jpeg - 5 - 7MB.

I now shoot on a Nikon D300. RAW files are now 18 - 19 mb, opened in CS3 at 34 mb - requiring interpolation by only 20%.

What I’ve Sold

Wonderful sunsets, superb travel pictures, glamour images, or maybe my Dad’s cat! These are just a few examples of shots that have sold.
My dad’s cat, police cars, road signs, street scenes in New York, studio models and traffic jams.

Finding More Value

There are plenty of publications that will promote your sold work, FPME (Now out of print March 2009) is just one of them and if you have sold a shot just let the editor know - chances are it can earn you some more money.

Not only that, look out for sites like Photographer Direct that provide an Image Request service - all you need to do is send 1 email. Also look to the corporate clients - they too may take an image if it fits with their style - be brave, make that approach, but do your research first.

Top Tips

  • Find a picture library that suits you
  • Don’t be put off by submission rules
  • Know your end image buyer
  • Start shooting what you are comfortable with - then move on
  • Check out what images already exist
  • Read the Picture Needs
  • Remember pictures images are perishable
  •

Check out how many pictures of your subject matter already exist in a library, then ask yourself - can these be improved, shot differently or updated.

Read the images needs issued by Stock libraries, they tell you what sells and what is needed, don’t ignore them.

Thank you for reading this article, I hope you found it interesting, should you have any questions, please feel free to make contact through the web site.

Where to order bestselling hd computer monitor?

HD monitors are an acute hugely popular option for computer owners.  The bright displays and crisp colours are just unrivaled for viewing files and multimedia content.  What most people have an issue with is really selecting the most suitable for their PC needs .  This choice is so difficult because there are so many different things to consider - such as size, price range, and features.  There are practically an unlimited number combinations and models and with so many decisions, buyers regularly feel overwhelmed.

HD Monitor merchants have two important roles : to bring you the best technology available, and to help understand precisely what it is.  One way to help you in understanding advanced technology is to come up with an easy, detailed name for it.  But infrequently the names are a little too straightforward, infrequently they are not descriptive enough, and sometimes they are downright deceptive.

Display’size is critical, I am sure you can tell why.  The larger the screen size of the HD monitor the more viewing area you have on your monitor, which equals a larger screen for bigger flicks, bigger games, and bigger net pages.  Also bigger screen sizes support higher resolutions.  LCD computer hd monitor size varies from seventeen inches all the way up to twenty-six inches.  A twenty-six in. LCD PC monitor is one nice piece of technology.  However , the higher they go the more money you can end up spending.  Most computer users stick with 19′, 20′, and 22′ hd monitors.  Right now these sizes are the sweet spots for the best bang for the buck.  Now, most monitor deals concentrate on these models.

Widescreen suggests that the PC monitor has an aspect proportion of 16:9, that has been growing in popularity over the last few years.  Widescreen is better because it lets you see the whole picture as it was intended in movies.  It allows a wider viewing area which is crucial, because on non-widescreen movies or 4:3 aspect ratio movies a large portion of the sides are cut off, and that will change a dramatic part of the flicks into a not-so-dramatic part.  With PCs, wide-screen allows you to have more sideways space for your applications, in overall PC usage it does not truly have any side-effects, and it makes it look similarly cool.  Most LCD PC monitors today are being sold in wide screen aspect ratios, you have to especially look for an LCD hd monitor with a 4:3 aspect proportion anymore.

Components and Reasons for Migraine Headaches

Like most other types of migraine headaches, the vestibular migraine has a component of debilitating pain along with light sensitivity and sound sensitivity that make the sufferer feel very ill during the migraine attack. Vestibular migraines also have some symptoms all their own and are triggered by different things than other migraines.

One symptom of a vestibular migraine is a visual aura effect that causes the illusion of movement or spinning. A sense of vertigo, or extreme dizziness and loss of balance, often accompanies this aura. Many people who suffer this particular type of migraine also report seeing other visual effects, flickering lights and spots in their field of vision being common. These are similar to the aura effect experiences prior to the onset of other types of migraine.

As with most migraines, extreme sensitivity to light and sound often drives the person suffering this severe form of headache to seek rest in a darkened, quiet room. Nausea and vomiting are often experienced along with the severe migraine pain.

Vertigo and other extreme dizziness may be experienced at other times without the pain of the migraine. These are still migraine related and may be an indication that one is about to strike. Most people who suffer from migraine related vertigo have been shown to be sensitive to motion, often having a history of becoming car sick while traveling.

These feelings of vertigo are caused by the way the migraine affects the balance maintaining structures in the inner ear. Most bouts of vertigo are short lived, usually only lasting a few moments. There are, however times when the vertigo may last for days at a time. Meclizine is a common prescription medication used to treat such long term bouts of vertigo.

It is commonly believed, though unproven, that genetic predisposition is the major contributor to whether or not a person will suffer from vestibular migraines. Many other causes and triggers are known to be the same or related to the causes and triggers of other types of migraine attack . Nobody has been able to quantitatively identify any specific known causes of vestibular migraine.

There is a theory that vertigo may be caused by abnormalities in the brain stem instead of the inner ear. Whether these changes are physical or chemical has not been adequately explored to make a positive statement. It has, however been proven that many cases of vertigo are suffered by people with absolutely nothing wrong with their inner ears and occurs in various types of migraines.

It is believed that these abnormalities in the brain stem may be the reason some people suffer from vestibular migraines. The vertigo effect caused by this type of migraine may occur at the same time as the migraine pain, but most often does not. Normally vertigo is experienced between the full blown severe migraine attacks.

Vestibular migraines have many symptoms in common with other types of migraine headaches. They can be triggered by some of the same things, though the exact causes are unknown. Vertigo is the most common defining symptom of vestibular migraines.

*This is not medical advise, if your having problems with migraine headaches or any medical concern you should always contact your doctor.*
